44th Parliament, 1st Session
Mr. Peter Julian (New Westminster—Burnaby, NDP): Mr. Speaker, I always enjoy hearing my colleague, though I must say he was so far removed from the actual bill we are supposed to be discussing tonight that it was unbelievable. Conservatives, for weeks and weeks, have been blocking every single piece of legislation. They have been gumming up the works for Routine Proceedings, stopping members of Parliament from presenting petitions and stopping private members' legislation. The Conservatives have basically tried to shut down the House of Commons.
NEW WESTMINSTER—BURNABY — Today, NDP Leader Jagmeet Singh and NDP House Leader Peter Julian held a town hall to talk about the rising threat of all forms of hate in our communities and how to fight back. Hundreds of people joined the town hall to listen to guest speakers Bernie Farber, Chair of the Canadian Anti-Hate Network, Dr. Barbara Perry, Director of the Center on Hate, Bias and Extremism at the Ontario Tech University, Pandit Roopnauth Sharma, President of the Canadian Multifaith Federation and President of the Hindu Federation.
“Canadians want reliable information about public health–especially during this pandemic. Unfortunately, the spread of fake news online has compromised the reliability and quality of the information people are getting. It has also created a space to feed online hate. People expect their government to help fix this problem.
OTTAWA — Today, the Chinese Canadian National Council Toronto Chapter (CCNCTO) and Project 1907 released a scathing report, “Another Year: Anti-Asian Racism Across Canada Two Years Into the Covid-19 Pandemic”. The report confirms a recent Statistics Canada analysis of the juristat article of the Police-Reported Hate Crime 2020 which showed a staggering increase of anti-Asian racism and other forms of hate and discrimination since the start of the COVID-19 pandemic.
OTTAWA — Today, in response to longstanding calls from activists, civil society, labour organizations in Canada and impacted communities around the world, NDP MPs Peter Julian (New Westminster-Burnaby) and Heather McPherson (Edmonton-Strathcona) tabled legislation to strengthen oversight and enforcement to ensure that Canadian corporations respect human rights and the environment abroad.
OTTAWA – While the cost of living keeps going up and people are struggling to make ends meet, the Trudeau government is failing to deliver the help Canadians urgently need. With nowhere to turn, some Canadians continue to take on high-interest loans. This week, NDP MP Peter Julian (New Westminster—Burnaby) re-introduced a bill to protect low-income and other vulnerable people from predatory lending practices.

The Canada Recovery Benefit is on the way out, the Star learned late Wednesday.
Two sources told the Star that the benefit, which replaced the Canada Emergency Response Benefit (CERB) last year, will be gone sooner rather than later. But some support will still be available for those who are not able to go to work temporarily because of strict lockdowns.
The fate of the federal government's soon-to-expire pandemic support measures could be revealed as early as Thursday. Supports for struggling businesses will remain in some form but be streamlined and made far more stringent in terms of applicants demonstrating losses.
OTTAWA - Conservatives say they disagree with a committee of MPs deciding that only fully vaccinated MPs, staff and visitors can enter the House of Commons.
Their objection represents the first challenge to Tuesday's ruling by the all-party board of internal economy _ the governing body of the Commons _ that only people who are double vaccinated will be allowed to enter the precinct.
The Liberals, NDP and Bloc Quebecois agree that members of Parliament should be fully vaccinated to take their seat, making it a rule for their candidates who ran in the recent federal election.
OTTAWA – Following the announcement that Parliament would reconvene on November 22nd, NDP House Leader, Peter Julian, wrote to Justin Trudeau’s Liberal government urging them to get Members of Parliament back to work earlier to help Canadians struggling in this fourth wave of COVID-19. Instead of urgently calling back Parliament after an election that resulted with virtually the same make up as last one, Justin Trudeau chose to make people and small businesses struggling with the ongoing COVID-19 crisis wait longer for the help they need.
NDP MP Peter Julian made the following statement:
“Since the pandemic began, Canadians have struggled financially while the ultra-rich have been making record profits. The most recently leaked documents, the Pandora Papers, are yet another reminder that ultra-rich Canadians are using tax loopholes to avoid paying their fair share and the government isn’t doing anything about it.
