FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE - People need help with affordability crisis

OTTAWA – Earlier this week, the Liberals and Conservatives teamed up to vote down an NDP proposal to stop giving billions of taxpayer dollars to profitable oil and gas companies and instead reinvest that money in Canadians struggling to make ends meet. Families are struggling to pay bills and make ends meet as inflation has hit a 30-year high.

“People are getting gouged at the pumps and seeing massive increases to the cost of groceries and housing,” said NDP MP Peter Julian (New Westminster – Burnaby). “People are frustrated and scared because they just can’t keep up with growing costs. All the while, profitable oil and gas companies are raking in record profits. The NDP’s proposal would have doubled the GST tax credit and Canada Child Benefit – giving back between $500 and $1000 to Canadian families. It doesn’t make sense that the Liberals and Conservatives are refusing to get Canadian families the help they need.”

The NDP’s motion called on the government to cancel all fossil fuel subsidies by the end of this year – including the new Carbon Capture Tax Credit – and reinvest the billions of dollars in public money to help people with growing costs and improve renewable energy. New Democrats also urged the Liberal government to help 12 million families by doubling the GST tax credit and increasing the Canada Child Benefit.

“In the face of skyrocketing inflation, Canadians are scrimping on essentials like medications and groceries, while big oil and gas corporations are making record profits,” said NDP MP Bonita Zarrillo (Port Moody—Coquitlam). “Instead of helping Canadians with their rising costs of living, the Liberals and Conservatives prefer to keep giving these corporations billions of dollars. We think that’s wrong. New Democrats will always fight for Canadian families, instead of protecting wealthy insiders.”
