Enbridge's Line 9 reversal could see Alberta crude reach eastern Canadian refineries next year, and while critics of federal energy policy are pleased at the prospect of job creation in the East, they expect regional divisions over energy projects to persist without a national energy strategy.

OTTAWA - Canada said it needs more time to complete its review of a $15.1-billion Chinese bid to take over oil and gas explorer Nexen Inc., a deal that has raised fears about opening the Canadian energy sector to the Asian power's state-owned companies.
The government on Thursday extended its review of CNOOC Ltd.'s bid by 30 days, to Nov. 11. The decision comes amid a growing furor over alleged Chinese espionage in North America that could intensify opposition to the Nexen deal.

OTTAWA – New Democrats welcome the Conservatives’ decision to extend the review period for the proposed takeover of Nexen by the state-owned CNOOC and call on the government to use this time for public consultations and to disclose the
consequences and benefits of this deal.
"There are still many unanswered questions and it’s the Conservatives’ job to respond to these questions before selling our resources to the highest bidder,� said NDP Energy & Natural Resources critic, Peter Julian. “The biggest question now is: are we going to have a genuinely transparent and complete study of the deal or is it going to be 30 more days of secrecy and political games?�
OTTAWA - A U.S. congressional panel's scathing criticism of China technology firms should give the Harper government cause to reject the proposed Chinese takeover of Alberta oil company Nexen, the opposition NDP said Tuesday.

CALGARY - Canada's official opposition has conducted its own "net benefit" test of China's $15.1-billion attempt to buy a Canadian oil sands producer and issued the deal a failing grade.
The federal New Democratic Party Thursday urged Prime Minister Stephen Harper to prevent Calgary-based Nexen Inc. from being sold to CNOOC Ltd., a state-controlled enterprise backed by China's Communist government. While unsurprising given the party's recent statements on the proposed deal, the move, experts say, was designed to provide the NDP with political capital.
