NEWS ~ Conservatives lack credibility on Tanker Safety Plan

“First, the Conservatives tried to ram through the Northern Gateway project without listening to British Columbians,� said NDP Energy and Natural Resources Critic Peter Julian. “Now they are trying to back-paddle with a lackluster spill plan that doesn’t even begin to address the Conservative cuts to spill prevention.�

Conservatives announced stronger aerial monitoring and tanker inspection measures, but the NDP says more work is needed to reverse previous cuts. The announcement comes on the tail of senseless coast guard closures and severe cuts to Marine Communication Traffic Services Centers.

“Let’s not forget that it was this government that shut down the oil spill response centre on the West Coast less than a year ago,� said Julian.

“Last fall, two major shipping vessels ran aground on Canada's West Coast,� said Fin Donnelly, the NDP’s West Coast Fisheries and Oceans Critic. “The Conservatives have gutted environmental protections and oil spill response capacity and have made severe cuts to the Coast Guard. British Columbians are right to be suspicious of the Conservative government's intentions."
