IN THE NEWS ~ NDP wants MPs to stop policing their own spending

OTTAWA - New Democrats are the latest party to try and prove they're keeners on accountability.

On Tuesday, NDP MP Peter Julian tabled a motion to create an independent body that would replace the secretive board that handles all the financial and administrative matters in the House of Commons.

Julian said the new body - in whatever form it would take - would effectively change the status quo by stopping MPs from policing themselves on spending matters.

If passed, the motion would launch public hearings looking into administrative oversight models used by other governments.

That report would be tabled in December so the model selected could be in place for the next fiscal year.

Julian said he hasn't heard from colleagues across the aisle on whether they'd support his motion, but added he's committed to re-tabling it in the fall if it doesn't pass before the House rises for summer break in the coming days.

All three parties have been pushing for more transparency as Senate spending scandals continue to swirl on the Hill.
