FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE ~ IT’S TIME FOR A COMPLETE BAN ON ASBESTOS

OTTAWA - Today, NDP MP Sheri Benson held a joint press conference with the President of the Canadian Labour Congress, Hassan Yussuff, in a combined effort to force the government to impose a complete ban on asbestos and all products containing asbestos in Canada.

“Thousands of Canadians are diagnosed with cancer annually due to exposure to asbestos,� said Benson. “Five months ago, the Prime Minister pledged to ban asbestos. Every day action is delayed; more lives are put at risk. The Liberal government must impose a complete ban on asbestos immediately.�

The NDP’s Labour Critic will be tabling a bill today that would legislate a complete ban on the substance. In addition to supporting the bill, the CLC has launched two online videos that raise awareness about the danger posed by asbestos and the need for a ban.

“Asbestos exposure is the number one cause of occupational death in Canada and since 1996, asbestos-related diseases have accounted for around a third of workplace deaths,� added Yussuff. “This is a health and safety issue, as well as an environmental issue, which all Canadians can agree on. Canada should ban asbestos now.�

The bill put forth by the NDP’s Benson also garnered support from Robert Blakely, President of Canada’s Building Trades, as well as the Canadian Cancer Society, the Professional Institute of the Public Service of Canada, UFCW Canada and the Public Service Alliance of Canada.
