#StopHateForProfit Town Hall

#StopHateForProfit Town Hall

In partnership with Dalhousie Student Union

Stop Hate for Profit – Halifax townhall hosted by MP Peter Julian - in partnership with Dalhousie University Student Union, is an non-partisan townhall for students and residents of Halifax to engage in an open dialogue about the rise of racism, hate and discrimination in recent years.

Anti-Semitism, anti-Black racism, Islamophobia, homophobia, transphobia and misogyny and associated ideology and other forms of hate are on the rise in Canada. Nationally, hate crimes have increased 80%. Nova Scotia has the highest increase (+70%) of hate crimes rates per 100,000 population. Most people are not aware that online platforms, such as Facebook & Instagram, use algorithms to control the type of content that users see because more engagement means higher advertising profit. Throughout the pandemic, this has led to many people being directed towards COVID-19 misinformation (such as anti-vax content) and extremist, racist and hateful online content.

Come join this in person townhall in Halifax with panel speakers - MP Peter Julian, Dr. Kesa Munroe-Anderson, Associate Professor at Acadia University, Aparna Mohan, President of Dalhousie University Student Union and Ammar Shakoor, President of St. Mary’s University’s Muslim Society, to discuss how hateful social media content and harmful algorithms hurt individuals and our society. A special video message by Imran Ahmed, CEO of Center for Countering Digital Hate, will be presented at the event.

United for Ukraine

United for Ukraine

Dear neighbours,

I condemn the terrible, unjustified, and unprovoked attacks on Ukraine by Russia. My team and I stand in solidarity with the people of Ukraine. I continue to work alongside my NDP colleagues in Parliament to fight for Ukrainians to have a strong humanitarian plan, support the thousands of people who require urgent refuge in Canada and fight for VISA-free access to Canada for Ukrainians.

Many constituents have been inquiring into how they can help locally to support Ukrainians fleeing Putin's war on the people of Ukraine.

I am co-hosting a United for Ukraine Benefit Concert on Sunday, July 17 from 6PM to 8PM (PDT) at Edmonds Plaza (7433 Edmonds Street, Burnaby) alongside the Burnaby Firefighters Local 233, the New Westminster Firefighters, Holy Eucharist Cathedral, and Burnaby Welcomes Ukraine group.

I hope to see you there!

Anti-Hate Virtual Town Hall

Anti-Hate Virtual Town Hall

We must be united to fight racism & stand up for human rights. During the pandemic, racist incidents reported to police have increased at an alarming rate. Tragically, we have seen an increase in Islamophobia, anti-Semitism, racism, homophobia, transphobia and misogyny in our society. We see racism against Black and Indigenous peoples, other racially marginalized communities, rising anti-Asian racism, and yet symbols of hate are freely displayed and sold across our country.

That’s why NDP MP Peter Julian tabled Private Member’s Bill C-229 calling on Justin Trudeau to ban the display of hate symbols like the Nazi hooked cross and Confederate flags. C-229 is a critical step to addressing hate and making our communities safer for everyone.

Community and elected leaders, concerned Canadians, anti-hate activists and other allies will gather at the virtual NDP Anti-Hate Town Hall to have a focused dialogue on anti-hate and anti-racism work in Canada and to address the growing violence, systemic racism and hatred that we are seeing in many Canadian communities.

Date: Wednesday, April 20th, 2022

Time: 5pm PT - 8pm ET
