FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE - Racist incident in Richmond an indication of the rise of hate crimes in Canada

A TikTok video has been circulating on social media since yesterday about a racist man, who claimed to be a lawyer, questioning a group of Chinese women at a Richmond Skytrain station, where they came from and why they were not speaking English. When confronted by a young Asian woman, the racist man shouted at her and told her to “get out of here”, “why do we have to bend over backwards?” and “you move to Japan, you learn Japanese because you are in Japan”.

This troubling incident in Richmond is a clear indication of the rise of racist incidents and hate crime incidents in Canada. According to the latest Statistics Canada report, the number of police-reported hate crimes increased by 72% over the last two years since 2019. And the most concerning was that an increase of 67% of hate crimes was motivated by religion, an increase of 64% of cases motivated by sexual orientation and an increase of 6% of cases targeting race or ethnicity.

“The COVID-19 pandemic has shone a harsh light on the deep socio-economic inequalities experienced by the most vulnerable populations in Canada. Tragically, we are witnessing a considerable increase in Islamophobia, anti-Semitism, racism, homophobia, transphobia and misogyny in our society. We see rising rates of racism and violent crimes against Indigenous people, Black, Asian and other marginalized communities and an increase in the number of hate groups in Canada. In this parliament,  I have tabled two important legislative tools to tackle racism, hate and discrimination. I am calling all Canadians and parliamentarians to support measures like M-14 ANTI-HATE CRIMES AND INCIDENTS MEASURES & Bill C-229 AN ACT TO AMEND THE CRIMINAL CODE (BANNING SYMBOLS OF HATE,” Julian stated.
