NEWS ~ NEARLY 100 REASONS WHY PROROGATION WILL HURT BRITISH COLUMBIANS

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE ~ September 17, 2013

BURNABY – The Conservative government’s decision to shut down Parliament will impact the lives of British Columbians says National NDP Caucus Chair Peter Julian.

“Stephen Harper is preventing MPs from doing what they were elected to do, said Julian. “In May and June alone, nearly 100 questions were asked by BC NDP MPs in the House of Commons concerning British Columbia, and now MPs from across Canada will not be able to exercise their democratic right to speak on behalf of their constituents because of prorogation.

Among the issues that need to be addressed urgently;

  • Special committee on missing and murdered aboriginal women;
  • Correcting the killer tax hike on Credit Unions and added tariffs on saris and spices;
  • Delay of Bill against transgender discrimination;
  • NDP amendments to the flawed Bill C57 which addresses tanker traffic safety, including the closure of the Kitsilano Coast Guard Station and scaling back of services, cancelling the cuts to Marine Communication Traffic Services Centers and the closure of BC’s regional office for emergency oil spills responders.

“During prorogation, NDP MPs will be fighting for their constituents and working hard to address the issues that concern them. We will not be silenced by the locked doors of the House of Commons. We will continue to speak out and push for solutions to urgent concerns raised by British Columbians and all Canadians. said Mr. Julian.
