IN THE HOUSE - NDP’s major win on Bill C-18: more help for independent publishers in Canada

Today, NDP MP Peter Julian (New Westminster-Burnaby) highlighted the NDP’s big win in improving the government’s Bill C-18 that aims to ensure that web giants pay their fair share for news content that appears on their platforms. With the NDP’s changes, the bill will ensure a playing level field for community broadcasters, Indigenous online news outlets, small newsrooms and independent publishers to negotiate with web giants for compensation for their content.

“The NDP succeeded in expanding bill C-18 to give more power and leverage to the smaller Canadian media outlets, such as Burnaby Beacon and New Westminster Anchor, to negotiate with web giants compensation they deserve for the quality content they produce and gets published on social media,” said Julian. “This is a big win for our content producers and local journalists who work hard to deliver reliable and quality information to Canadians. New Democrats were determined to ensure they get their fair share for their hard work.”

Julian added that this wouldn’t have been possible without the important and strong advocacy of Independent Publishers of Canada, Dadan Sivunivut, APTN, the Center for Media, Technology and Democracy, Fédération nationale des communications et de la culture (FNCC-CSN), UNIFOR, CUPE National, Canadian Association of Community Television Users and Stations (CACTUS), Fédération des télévisions communautaires autonomes du Québec and National Campus and Community Radio Association.

“New Democrats will always stand up to web giants and make sure they play by the same rules as Canadian companies,” added Julian.

“Thank you to MP Julian for standing up for Indigenous News Media. Without his amendments, Indigenous News Media would have been completely left out.”

  • Jean LaRose, President/CEO of Dadan Sivunivut.

“MP Julian’s amendment to include owners and partners of news media organizations is a breakthrough in our industry. Without these amendments, small newsrooms that are operated by start-up entrepreneurial journalists would have been left out of opportunities to negotiate with web giants.”

  • Jeanette Ageson, spokesperson for the Independent Online Publishers of Canada.

“MP Julian’s amendment ensures transparency and a fair bargaining and arbitration process so that small online media organizations can make informed decisions when negotiating with web giants.”

  • Randy Kitt, Director of Media, Unifor.
