IN THE HOUSE ~ Statement from NDP Foreign Affairs Critic Paul Dewar on Egypt

“I am shocked by the death sentences passed Monday against 529 people in Minya, Egypt.

New Democrats join with human rights groups and international allies in condemning this mass sentencing, which came after a two-day trial without any possibility of due process. The failure to ensure a fair trial is deeply worrying. The decision must be reversed.

The Government of Canada must urge Egyptian authorities to ensure that the basic human rights of all Egyptians are respected, regardless of partisan affiliation or personal beliefs, and that the rule of law is observed in all cases. The Government must also request that Egyptian authorities drop all charges against Canadian citizen and journalist Mohamed Fahmy.

An effective judicial system, governed by the rule of law and due process, is an essential part of democracy and a prerequisite for lasting stability. New Democrats will continue to oppose the death penalty and call for the respect of democratic principles in Egypt.
