FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE - MP Peter Julian Supports Additional Security Infrastructure Program In Midst of Rise in Antisemitism and Islamophobia

Today, Peter Julian MP (New Westminster-Burnaby) issues his support for the federal government’s announcement of an additional $5 million to help Canadian communities at risk of hate-motivated crimes in community centers, places of worship and other institutions.

“The NDP and I have been calling for an increase of Security Infrastructure Program (SIP) for a long time. We are glad that the federal government finally stepped up to increase the funding,” said MP Julian.

“The world has been horrified and heartbroken by the violence in Israel and Palestine. New Democrats condemn Hamas’ brutal attack on Israel. We call for an immediate ceasefire, the release of all hostages, the protection of all civilians, and for immediate humanitarian aid to Gaza. We are also profoundly concerned about what is happening in Canada. We’ve seen a sharp increase of hate against Jewish and Muslim Canadians since the Israel-Hamas conflict broke out. Toronto police has reported a over 130% rise in hate-related calls. The National Council for Canadian Muslims has seen a thirteen hundred per cent increase of Islamophobic incidents across the country. There has been a four hundred per cent increase in Antisemitism since last year. New Democrats condemn all forms of hate and discrimination, especially Antisemitism and Islamophobia. All levels of government need to provide strong leadership to ensure public safety in our communities, including places of worship and schools. Together, let’s take a stand against all forms of hate,” added MP Julian.
