FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE ~ LIBERALS REJECT INDIGENOUS CONSULTATIONS ON PARIS AGREEMENT RATIFICATION

OTTAWA – The Liberal government today rejected an NDP amendment to the motion on ratification of the Paris Agreement that would have included working with Indigenous governments in developing concrete plans to fight climate change.

“The Liberal government was elected on the promise that they would do things differently, said NDP Leader Tom Mulcair. “Liberals very clearly promised a new era and a nation-to-nation relationship with Indigenous peoples but instead, today, they stood in the House and rejected our efforts to include Indigenous governments in the plan to fight climate change.

The NDP amendment would have added consultations with “Indigenous governments alongside provincial and territorial governments in the motion to ratify the Paris Agreement on climate change. It would also have required the government to develop a concrete plan to meet our international climate commitments.

“The Liberals have not lived up to their promises for a new commitment to First Nations consultation, nor to their commitments to effective action on climate change, added Mulcair.
